Brutalist architecture painted onto ceramic vessel

Brutal-idyl

Ceramic, 2019

Snapshots of the Brutalist architectural style are gathered to create an overarching study and reflection of a collective experience. Hand-painted stamp-sized images form an array which continues to surround the vessel.

The relationship between concrete and ceramic is embodies by the dual states of permanence and fragility. While some of the buildings featured may have already been demolished, being taken from a 1960's book describing the architectural style on the rise.

The body of the piece is fired under a reduction atmosphere, producing a rich tone in contrast to the structural line work.
